Brainstorm Blog #4: AR/VR

For this project, I will create an AR demonstration of global warming. I will create a combined QR code and AR marker that will show the view the most recent temperature anomaly data on an AR globe.


I will use elevation data (from ETOPO1) to deform the 3D surface of the globe in an exaggeration of global topography:



The globe will be colored using the latest available temperature anomaly data (from NOAA)


Steps:

  1. Use BlenderGIS extension to import data onto a mesh plane in blender: https://github.com/domlysz/BlenderGIS

  2. Wrap the globe using two Simple Deformation bend modifiers: https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/52904/wrap-curve-around-sphere

  3. Weld

  4. Tilt at 23.5 degrees to match Earth's rotational axis

Ideally the project will be expanded to show an animation of temperature anomaly over time and a countdown-style visualization of the year
