Bees

"Bees" shows bees swarming off a human ribcage towards the camera, with a soundtrack of buzzing. The overall effect of the piece is to produce a feeling of anxiety and agitation. The human ribcage is a memento mori, and produces a sense of body horror when covered in insects. The buzzing also adds to the tension. Insects on the body literally produce a sensation of skin crawling; the bees in this piece are the focus of the viewer's anxiety and discomfort. The use of bees instead of flies is intended to produce the fear of being stung, and cause the viewer to remain frozen, waiting for something to happen. Finally, as one the bees appear to attack, swarming towards the camera and eventually occluding the view of the rest of the scene. One bee can still sting, but as a swarm they are a formidable and deadly force despite their small size.
